If your home is at risk of, or susceptible to, damage from frost and freezing temperatures, this is for you...

Things are pretty frosty in the UK, to say the least.

As we start a new year - it could be the perfect time to think about protecting your home this winter, and starting 2026 off right.

Preparing for low temperatures and frosty conditions will not only lower your energy bills and prioritise your health and safety, but will also prevent damage to your home from harsh weather.

Follow these tips and avoid unexpected expenses and unwanted insurance claims.

Protect your home against the main winter risks:

AT A GLANCE

Save energy when costs are high. Home energy prices in the UK rose by 2.6% in real terms in April-June 2025 compared to the same quarter in 2024, driven mainly by gas prices rising by 7.8%.* 1

Preventing frozen pipes

You can always expect a couple of icy spells each year, and those can damage your pipes. Here’s how to prepare:

If you’re going away, try setting your radiators to ‘frost protection’ mode, or if you have a smart thermostat, switch it to anti-frost mode to help prevent the pipes from freezing.
Consider lagging the outside pipes and those in your loft to prevent them from freezing and bursting when the temperature drops. Lagging just means wrapping foam tubes around your water pipes. It’s affordable, and you can give it a try yourself.
Make sure you know where the stop tap is and check that it works, in case you need to shut off the water supply.
Keep your heating on low if you’ll be away for a while.

AVOIDING STORM DAMAGE

When winter rolls around, you’re more likely to see high winds, storms, and occasionally snow, all of which can negatively affect your home. You may want to take a few steps to help prevent damage.

Find out whether a storm is due by checking the Met Office weather forecast.*2
You can also sign up for flood alerts from the Environment Agency if your home is at risk of flooding.*3

Take a look at your roof for any missing tiles, and don’t forget to check the felt on your sheds and garages. It might be a good idea to call in a professional instead of trying to inspect those high roofs yourself.
Keep your gutters, gullies and drains, including downpipes, clear of leaves.
Prepare for high winter winds by taking steps, such as securing loose objects and keeping trees pruned (you may need to check with your local authority to ensure they aren’t subject to a Preservation Order).

KEEP BURGLARS AT BAY

The long winter nights may provide extra cover for burglars. Here’s how you can make your home less of an easy target without spending much or anything at all:

Lock your windows and doors.
Don’t leave spare home or car keys in view from outside, or near windows or letterboxes (burglars are aware of every hiding place, including false stones)
Store garden tools, which burglars could otherwise use to break a window and gain entry. Find out how to keep your shed secure.
Ask a neighbour to park a car in your driveway if you’re going away, to give the impression you’re at home.
Put up a cheap ‘beware of the dog’ sign whether or not you have a dog.
Join the Neighbourhood Watch4 for safety tips and learn about any community issues on Crimestoppers.*5
For long-term prevention all year, consider installing smart security devices, such as video doorbells and motion sensors.

MINIMISE FIRE HAZARDS

During winter, things such as open fires, lit candles and fireworks can make house fires more likely. Follow these tips to help keep the risk as low as possible:

Install a working smoke detector and a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm, as both are essential for safety. Remember to test them monthly.
Don’t leave candles unattended, especially in a draughty spot or somewhere they could get knocked over.
It’s a good idea to have a guard in front of an open fire if you’re stepping out of the room.
Buy a couple of fire extinguishers – keep them handy and know how to use them.
Don’t fill a chip pan more than one-third full of fat or oil.
Always switch off electric blankets before getting into bed and make sure they carry a safety mark.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND COST OF LIVING

UK energy prices have gone up and down a lot in the past five years, so many people wait until the last minute to turn on the heating. In 2023-24, approximately 3.2 million households in England struggled to keep warm during the winter.*6

As well as preventing frozen pipes, follow these practical energy-saving tips to help keep your home warm in winter:

Bleed your radiators
Add insulation
Use thermal curtains
Install radiator reflectors
Service your boiler

HEALTH AND DAMP PREVENTION

According to the latest government figures, 1.3 million households in England were living in damp homes, and more than 600,000 of those households had at least one member with a health condition.

Damp produces mould that can cause allergic reactions and asthma attacks. “They can also produce irritants and sometimes toxic substances,” according to the NHS.*7

Tips for avoiding damp and mould in winter:

Ventilate your rooms daily
Use dehumidifiers
Dry your clothes in a well-ventilated area
Use extractor fans when cooking

ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSION

UK health guidance recognises that homes without accessibility features are often less protected in winter. The elderly, disabled, and those with physical or learning disabilities or long-term illness are especially vulnerable to health problems associated with cold homes.*8

The government recommends heating key rooms, such as the lounge and bedroom, to at least 18°C, and seeking financial support through grants and support for those on low incomes.*9

Using non-slip mats, grab rails, and motion-sensor lighting can help to prevent falls indoors and outdoors during winter. If you have a vulnerable neighbour, ask if you can clear their path and steps of ice and snow in the winter months.

Check the Citizens Advice and Age UK websites for information on the available grants and extra payments, such as the Cold Weather Payment.

FROM BROKERS, TO BIKERS.

Team Pangea successfully completed their Tour to France challenge!

On Thursday 2nd October 2025, our team of raring (and slightly nervous) amateur cyclists set off on their Pangea Tour to France cycling challenge, in aid of raising money for Friends of the Family Winchester.

Day 1 started off 'business as usual' at Pangea HQ in Colden Common, until 1pm when the team had to 'get in gear' and hit the road towards the ferry port in Portsmouth, equalling just over 20 miles.

After spending the night on the ferry to cross the channel over to St Malo, France, Team Pangea was up early and on their bikes for 9am to face Day 2 of Pangea Tour to France. It was a whole day of cycling through France and thanks to Storm Amy, the weather conditions were anything but easy on our cyclists. Forget sunny French coastlines - instead, it was torrential rain from start to finish, leaving everyone soaked through by the time they reached their hotel in Granville.

Although it was an incredibly wet day of cycling, the team pushed through and completed their 75 miles.

Unfortunately for our cyclists, Day 3 was not much better in terms of the weather. Heavy winds, further rain, and another 70+ miles of cycling meant that Team Pangea were really starting to feel the struggle. At this point, the team from Andy Cook Cycling (Mark and Graham) were our saviours, as they supported each and every one of the Pangea cyclists with motivational words and a little push here and there. Thanks to their encouragement, the Pangea Tour to France challenge was over halfway complete, and the finish line was in sight as we prepared for one last day of peddling.

Day 4 - the final day! What a difference the last day was, thankfully. The cyclists had calmer weather conditions and plenty of sunshine to help them forget about their burning bums and aching legs. And the route was a treat, aside from a few ridiculously steep hills, as we pedalled along the stunning coastline of Normandy and even got to pass through some historic beaches. By 3pm, the team had crossed the finish line!

After a lot of endurance, the whole team were thrilled to see that following the completion of this cycling expedition, the generosity of our sponsors and supporters shone through. Pangea Tour to France raised a superb total of £8,900 to go towards the incredible work done by Friends of the Family Winchester.

Installing Solar Panels - Insurance Considerations

Photovoltaic Panels are increasing in popularity and attract plenty of benefits which most insurers are keen to support.

However...inevitably they pose significant additional risks such as:

Most insurers would consider the installation of panels to be a material fact that must be disclosed, failing to do so could jeopardise the cover provided by the policy.

Typically, once completed and handed over by the contractor, a roof installation will be deemed to be part of the fabric of the building and the building sum insured will need to include the cost of replacing the equipment from scratch. Failing to do so is likely to lead to underinsurance and the Average clause being applied. This has the effect of proportionately reducing any claims payment.

If you are considering installing solar panels it is important that you liaise with your insurers prior to proceeding with any installation to ensure cover can be provided and to understand any additional insurance costs involved.

We are looking for an enthuastic individual to join our expanding commercial insurance team.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for generating new business and to develop your own client portfolio. Unlike normal business development roles, they will also be required to maintain and retain your book of business.

A strong insurance background is required with a minimum qualifcation of Level 3 CII Certification. Funding for furrther professional qualifications is availiable.

The candidiate will be provided with all the sales tools required to carry out this role.

A preferred candidate must have:

Experience of targeting new business preferable
Proven communication skills with the ability to work across all levels
Strong communication skills Strong project management experience.
Proven ability to develop simplified and efficient business processes
Experience of managing own time and completing multiple tasks/assignments with expected deadlines
Experience of developing and mentoring staff Experience / working knowledge of MS Excel and Word, Internet and email Business development experience targeting new business preferable

What have we learned from the Coronavirus crisis?

We’ve all learnt many things as a result of Covid-19; that we can work well from home; that there is a thing as too many quizzes; that we make good or terrible teachers; that we can put on weight far too easy or can turn the living room into a gym; that isolation can be really tough or the catalyst for new invention and a new appreciation for how we value our time and what we do with it.

However, I think one of the main things we’ve learned is how financially fragile so many of us are – that a financial back-up plan is vital to get us through difficult times.

Fortunately one of the things our government got right in many, although not all, respects was the financial assistance it provided. One of the first things the government announced was the Job Retention Scheme followed by similar arrangements for self-employed workers. More than one in four UK workers (8.9 million) have been furloughed since the scheme began and 2.6 million self-employed workers have applied for the SEISS grant.
It could be easy, when we finally come through the other side, because of this safety net, to forget how fragile we were. Or equally it could be easy to think should we hit difficult times again that the net will be there to catch us. Now that may be true if something on such a global scale hits us, but what if the cruel hand of fate doesn’t grab us all but simply points a finger at you?

What if the illness that comes isn’t the result of a pandemic but is something much more personal - A serious injury, a critical illness, a mental health issue, a life changing condition?

According to research by the insurer Legal and General, the average UK employee and their household is only 32 days from the breadline. 46% of us have less than £1,500 in savings with 23% having none at all. That means nearly half of us are effectively one missed pay packet away from serious financial trouble.

Statutory Sick Pay is just £95.85 per week for 28 weeks and after that, state benefits are unlikely to be any better. For most of us this is a huge difference to the 80-100% of pay received whilst furloughed.

According to the Office of National Statistics, the average household spends £572.60 per week. So how would many of us would cope if we were unable to work due to a prolonged illness and forced to rely on the state? The answer is that most of us couldn’t, or at least we couldn’t live in the way we do now.

Most people, when questioned, think their biggest asset is their home or, if renting, their car. It’s not – YOU are your biggest asset. And yet, we insure our home, our car, our phone and even our pets. But how many of us insure ourselves? According to the Mintel Report of 2020 less than one in 10 adults in the UK have something in place to ensure their income is secure. For mortgage owners this figure rises to only 19% but for the self-employed, possibly the most vulnerable group when it comes to financial resilience, this figure is at 9%.

If you’ve not considered protecting your income before maybe now is the time to do so. It doesn’t need to cost much but income protection is a much more complicated product than simple life insurance as it’s designed to be flexible enough so as meet the needs of each individual. It also doesn’t cost anything to speak to a broker to find out exactly what you can cover, the options for underwriting and how much you will need to spend.

As the main bread winner in my family I know how much everything depends on my ability to go to work each day and earn a living. I know how quickly things could fall apart if I wasn’t able to, how quickly the dominoes would fall. If this pandemic has reminded us of anything, I think for many us, it’s that the unexpected can happen without much warning and if it does, we need a plan B.
